For a few months now, street racers and burnout enthusiasts have been congregating at a parking lot not far from my home. Now, I don’t have a problem with people getting together to show off their cars, but they were also doing donuts on the frontage road and street racing around my neighborhood. You could hear the fart can mufflers for blocks as they tore up the neighborhood —and their tires. My son could hear them in his bedroom and kept him awake.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Either by chance, or by plan, they picked a great spot. Not only is there easy access to a toll frontage road, the lot is also right on the border of Austin and the surrounding Travis County. The lot is in the city, so that’s the purview of Austin Police. But as soon as they leave the lot and cross the street, they are in Travis County and the APD can’t (or won’t) follow them.

On Saturday night, the cops moved in. It took a coordinated effort of APD, Travis County Sheriff, Williamson County Sheriff, State Troopers, and Round Rock Police to shut this down. Exits were blocked, streets were closed, citations were written. Fifteen were arrested for reckless driving. It remains to be seen if they will come back.

This video was shot before the property owner installed speed bumps every 10 feet or so. Cops arrive at the end, but they only ever just chased people away, just to have them come back the next weekend.

The hatchet job done on that poor S2000 is certainly grounds for incarcerating the lot of them.

Good to hear. We all love cars, but putting others in danger is no good.

Should have just sent a Mustang. Not one of those cars would have survived.

I saw a couple of your birds today. Took a quick trip down to AUS. Haven’t been since October; weather has just been too bad. And it still wasn’t very good this morning.

Good! Hopefully they don’t come back!

I went full on rant mode to one of the apprentice techs in my shop a while back when I found out he likes to street race his mustang. I think I almost made him cry. I don’t feel bad.

I can’t believe the APD doesn’t have agreements to pursue across the city limits. But I do believe it took a coordinated effort to nail these guys. Good riddance (I hope).

Is it safe to click on the first video? If it’s just a car show, great. But I don’t want to contribute a YouTube view towards street racing.

I’ve skipped through the first video, and it’s just a lot of wannabe thugz standing around their cars. The second video shows the burnouts.

I’m not sure what the agreements are, but I think you are probably right. We have a very active community rep who works closely with the police, and she forwarded an email from TCSO that they were assembling a combined jurisdictional force to deal with this. I hope they came down hard enough to force them elsewhere. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody, but I’m not interested in putting up with it for the good of others.

In fact, I would argue that street racing related deaths only make the news because they are so few and far between. Looking down at your phone is statistically more likely to cause a fatal accident.

A friend of his actually just wrapped his own car around a tree. They were out together, each driving their own cars. Broke both femurs and was in a come for a few days.

Near my parents there used to be a group that would hoon around the office park parking lots at night. Then one of them fell out of an open doored Jeep, and was run over. Now the office park has a night security guard at the entrance, the “enthusiasts” have spray painted the guy’s nickname on a nearby rock outcropping (which is littered with mini liquor bottles and the like), and the road is well marked from a great many memorial burnouts.

Probably would have been a better outcome for the police to have gotten to them first.

People also slip in their bathtubs. I don’t care if racers kill themselves. It’s the innocent drivers I’m concerned about. Two people were killed in this area by racers last year.

My point is, it’s not really a likely scenario. People do dumber things on the road far, far more often. I drive 1000+ miles a week for work, and I would much rather deal with street racers than someone in a Nissan Altima swerving in and out of their fucking lane because they can’t be fucking bothered to look up that I deal with every day. You know what else happens every day? Someone dies from distracted driving, every. Single. day. You know what almost never happens? Someone dying because they got hit by a street racer. It happens, but it’s as likely to happen as being struck by lightning.

I’m just saying, it’s like Oppo thinks that it is the worst thing to do while driving, while it’s probably one of the statistically safest dumb things you can do while driving, as in how often it happens vs. someone actually crashing. Your child is more likely to be killed on the bus ride home than by street racer.

You make it sound like you support street racing. Both things are very bad in their own right. They both elevate danger and both make you terrible. You can check your phone when you’re off the road and you can race in a place meant for it. Don’t discount one just because the other exists.

This comment is almost profound in its stupidity, in that every word of it could be true and your conclusion would still be indefensible. Distracted driving definitely causes a lot of harm, largely because a lot of people do it, and I certainly agree that we should encourage people to do it less. Less people drive drunk than drive distracted, and drunk driving hurts or kills a lot of people, and I think we all agree that it too is bad. Meanwhile, you’re out here arguing that street racing is okay... because it hurts or kills less people in total , which is true in large part because a lot less people do it.

You might as well argue that more people are killed by being shot than by falling anvils, so you shouldn’t shoot people but it’s fine to drop anvils out of high windows. The two have nothing to do with each other. Both are bad, don’t do them.

Agree to disagree. The impact of street racing and deaths is so small that the govt doesn’t even have it on a list of top causes of automotive deaths. So, it clearly isn’t as much of a danger as you believe.

So you agree with every part of my comment except the conclusion, and your conclusion is that you, special flower to whom rules and basic morals don’t apply, need not refrain from doing dangerous, irresponsible things as long as few enough other people do them that the total level of damage done across society remains low? This, as I said, is illogical, irresponsible, and profoundly stupid.
